Now, back on point: We need to remember that, in old testament times, we (man) needed some path back to oneness with God.  This path begins in about 1,731 B.C.  In that year, God made a promise to a faithful follower, Abraham, that he would be the patriarch of a vast nation (the Jewish nation) and would, one day, inherit the promise land, a portion of which we now refer to as Israel.  Right about now you may be asking, “what do the Jews have to do with this? I thought this was a discussion of Christianity” … well, it is.  The Jewish nation is pivotal to Christianity, because God created the Jewish nation to be the linage trough which spirit Jesus, who was to become both God and man, was to enter our physical world.  That special status did not, however, ensure that the Jewish nation’s life would be an easy one.  There were times of faithfulness to God, and resultant blessing, and times when the Jewish leaders fell away. There were wars, famine, a migration to Egypt and, while there, a change of Egyptian government resulted in brutal enslavement … 400 years of enslavement!  In all, it took 500 years for the Jewish nation to occupy the land that God had promised Abraham.
