The moment they disobeyed, man’s relationship with God changed. Most importantly, man lost perfection, that state of innocence which had allowed direct interaction with his Creator. In place of joyous fellowship, man’s relationship with God was replaced by fear (Adam and Eve hid in fear). That change had a “forever” impact to Adam’s lineage, which includes you and me. As descendants of Adam, we entered this world separated from God and, because of Adams sin, all of mankind is born with a propensity to sin.
God’s relationship with his created beings changed. He meted out following punishments:
God cursed women with severe pain during childbirth … it would be interesting to know how childbirth might have worked, had Eve made a different choice.
God gave the woman a desire to control, at the same time made her subject to rule by her husband (this Divine declaration is interpreted in several ways, with this being the most common).
Because of man’s sin, God placed a curse against the ground, and declared that only through painful toil, would man eat food from it. Read that more broadly to mean that God would no longer provide for our physical needs, that we were going to have to work for a living (please note that the very next time your alarm goes off on a workday morning).
The human body was created with the physical ability to live forever; note here that science does not fully understand why we age. After his sin, God told Adam that he would return to the dust from which he was made. Adam’s sin introduced, for the first time, physical death.
